McCain Operatives Afraid of Giuliani? Check Out Jim Nussle's Email List

I'm on Jim Nussle's e-mail list and I don't live in Iowa, which makes me an incorrigible political junkie. On Tuesday, the campaign sent an e-mail entitled "Watch Mayor Rudy Giuliani with Jim Nussle in Iowa," linking to this video of Hizzoner campaigning for Nussle for governor.

This morning, I open my e-mail, and it's a "A Message from Senator John McCain." Thinking it's my Straight Talk email, I open it. Instead, it's a Nussle campaign e-mail signed by McCain. Most interesting line: "Jim is a reformer because he cares about getting results."

A reformer with results? Isn't that the line W. used to beat McCain like a drum in the South Carolina primary? It is indeed.

What do you want to bet that the Giuliani e-mail caused all sorts of alarm bells to go off in the attentive-to-detail Straight Talk high command? You know, for all their repeated bragging that Rudy won't run, or don't worry, Rudy is too liberal to get nominated (he "wouldn't get out of the gate," in John Dennehy's words), they do seem to be putting a lot of energy into countering the Mayor. Their tough talk could be a sign of weakness, a recognition that if Rudy gets in, it's Game Over, or, at the very least, a tough row to hoe.

Dear Senator McCain and Governor Palin,
As the campaign’s conclusion fast approaches, the pundits and the opinion polls suggest that the worst possible outcome may indeed happen. That worst outcome is the election of Barack Obama to the office of President of the United States of America.
In the opinion of many good and thoughtful Americans, there could be no result more potentially injurious to the United States than this one, for it affords to one so inexperienced and untested unfathomable power to do great damage, damage perhaps unprecedented in our nation’s history...damage that will be immediate and irreversible. In my opinion, the very Constitution is threatened, and for that reason alone, there can be nothing left to chance or faint optimism.
Bearing in mind that fundamental threat to the very foundation of this nation, and faced with the possibility that it is in grave and irreversible danger, all that can be fairly and reasonably done to prevent such a catastrophe must be called upon.
To that end, I reference the utterly astounding comment of Joe Biden that should Obama be elected, that within six months of his inauguration, he will be “tested” by our enemies. Biden said: "Mark my words. It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. Remember I said it standing here if you don't remember anything else I said. Watch, we're gonna have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy. And he's gonna have to make some really tough -- I don't know what the decision's gonna be, but I promise you it will occur. As a student of history and having served with seven presidents, I guarantee you it's gonna happen."
Mr. Obama would need help and support, Mr. Biden suggested, “because it’s not gonna be apparent, initially, that we’re right.” He then spotted the media in the room, “I probably shouldn’t have said all this because it dawned on me that the press is here.”
The press was there, indeed. And these comments beg the question, what “response,” what “really tough decisions” is it that will require the help and support of Obama’s supporters? What behavior would be so stunning as to threaten Obama’s standing in the nation’s collective conscience that would have such a dramatic negative influence? What would, by its very mention at this moment before the election be so potentially frightening to Obama supporters and your supporters that it could dramatically turn the tide in this final week, and flip the electorate into the republican McCain/Palin camp?
The answer, Senator McCain and Governor Palin, is found in one phrase…reinstatement of the military draft. Were this the Obama response to an attack or a international “test” by our enemies, and were it necessary that Obama respond with military force anywhere in the world, given the circumstances facing our military regarding adequate manpower, there would be no choice for an Obama administration to immediately and quickly bolster those forces by conscription.
It would take nothing more than to raise the question. To suggest that this might well be the meaning of Senator Biden’s message, the hidden agenda they simply cannot reveal before November 4th for fear of certain defeat and a dramatic turn in their support to you. Given the fact that Obama garners his decisive support from young people, those most vulnerable to a draft, such a suggestion would raise in their minds the risk of voting for Obama. Of course, there are the parents of all these millions of draft-eligible young men and women, as well as grandparents, who would prefer not to take the risk of an Obama vote. And once re-instituted, a draft would not be easily rescinded, making vulnerable an entire up-and-coming generation of grade schoolers and those still not born.
All that is necessary is to raise the question. Is this the “dirty little secret” that Biden and Obama are harboring? A draft to conscript our young men and women to fight on yet one more front in Pakistan or Korea or the Ukraine? Syria or very possibly in Iran?
This may be the final chance to turn the election, sir. I suggest you use it, and do so vigorously and immediately.

Yours very sincerely,

Dr. Bert Bergland
