Watch out for Romney!

Despite his horrible "name-recognition" factor (what these cold-call polls really represent) Romney is doing better and better in each round of these kind of polls. Most people I talk to have never heard of him, and even most Mormons I speak with don't even know that he's going to be running for president! Once he is out on the campaign trail and officially committed to running and on every news outlet ad nauseum he will pull even with, and then run away from everyone else in the field.

Romney is incredibly smart, very charismatic (and telegenic), squeaky clean, very rich (and a good fundraiser), a pragmatist, and a conservative who had been able to get things done amongst liberals. Sounds like what our country will need in 2008!

Giuliani or Romney offer the best chance of winning the general election against the Dems (McCain will fold in the public eye), but, of the two, Romney is conservative enough to make it through the GOP primaries (if he weren't Mormon there would be NO competition . . . but religious bigotry is unfortunately alive and well) whereas Giuliani's past (pro-gay rights, pro-abortion, messy public divorce, etc.) will make him a pill that is too hard to swallow for the GOP base.

Well, we're clearly not going to convince each other. :-)

Don't get me wrong. Romney's a good guy. But a one-term governor with no national security experience simply cannot compare to the most successful public executive of our generation. Rudy stared our nation's worst crisis in the face and brought us through it with grace and courage.

OK, down off my soapbox. Overall, Romney is far preferable to McCain and would be my second choice.

As whether the Mormon thing hurts Romney more, or the pro-choice thing hurts Rudy more -- especially given his reputation -- I'd say they hurt about equally.

I think Rudy could be the only thing stopping Romney from getting into the White House. Romney can get more GOP base support than Rudy and has a better chance of winning the primary than does Rudy (IMO). I think huge block of primary voters will be choosing between Romney and Giuliani (sounds like you're in that camp . . . though you've picked your horse, eh?). If Rudy decides to run they'll end up spitting the moderate Republican/Business-friendly votes and we'll be stuck with someone like Allen (who won't win a general election) or McCain (who is an unacceptable alternative to me an many GOPers)

So stop trying to draft Rudy!!! :-)

FYI I've got your poll summary linked from both of my blogsites http://blog.electromneyin2008.com/ and http://www.iowansforromney.blogspot.com/
