Rudy Too Nice?

Pulling punches isn't a criticism of Rudy you hear too often. Wasn't he supposed to be a "fascist bully" in New York? Not so, says Slate's John Dickerson, who slips out of his D.C. sinecure for an afternoon to witness Rudy campaigning for Michael Steele in nearby Maryland, regaling readers in a moment where Rudy tried to rein in partisan passions in his audience and pooh-poohing Rudy's chances of winning the Republican nomination as a result.

But as Baseball Crank points out, Dickerson is missing an important bit of context. Steele isn't just running in bright blue Maryland, but his election may depend on crossover votes from supporters of the losing Democrat in the Sept. 12 primary. Steele is not best served by raging partisanship at his events, something the pitch-perfect Rudy instinctively understood.

In more appropriate venues, Rudy hasn't been afraid to unload on the Democrats. Just a few weeks ago on Hannity, he attacked the "anti-American" attitude of the modern Left. In an event attended by our very own The Bij in blue Minnesota, Rudy served up conservative fare on judges and immigration. And he hasn't been afraid to indulge the anti-Hillary passions of his audiences.

In fact, watch Rudy's RNC speech and John McCain's side by side, and tell me which one was tougher.

Of course, had he been paying more attention to blogs like Giuliani Blog and Race 4 2008, Dickerson would have known all this.
