Giuliani Notes: Rudy Wins South Carolina GOP Debate

U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) (L) and former New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani talk before the start of a nationally televised Republican presidential debate from the Koger Center at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina, May 15, 2007.

So, who won tonight's debate?

Flap will wait for the polls. But, is there any doubt?

McCain and Romney were smacking each other and Rudy looked like a President and his throw down of Ron Paul begs to be seen again:

From the Giuliani campaign:

“Tonight it was clear there was only one candidate on the stage ready to be President of the United States. Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s command of the issues and unifying, optimistic vision for the future of this country stood out in stark contrast – proving he is the strong leader these times demand. He will bring our Party and our country together to win the terrorists’ war on us and keep our economy strong and growing.”

Indeed

And the Fox News text message poll has Ron Paul winning......

Stay tuned.......

Update:

From The Corner:

A Bad Night for Romney [Ramesh Ponnuru]

Last time around, Romney won and Rudy lost; this time around, I'd say it was exactly the other way around, with McCain in the middle both times.

Greetings from Des Moines, Iowa.

I'd have to say that Rudy stepped up the performance big time last night. I gave him a great "unofficial" review last night.

Congratualtions Rudy fans.

Haha, his "throw down" of Ron Paul only blatantly exposed his own ignorance of history and foreign policy... but I'm sure he was too busy fighting off terrorists with his bare hands to read the 9/11 commission's report.

Paul, I couldn't disagree more. It is indeed the Congressman who has misread history.

First, the isolationist wing of the GOP was way wrong about our need for European involvement in the early to mid 30s. While a war in the Rhineland would have killed a few hundred thousand in 1935-36, WW2 killed tens of millions beginning in 1939. Citing Dewey, who lost twice, isn't the best analogy either.

Second, the moral equivalency that arises from the Congressman's careful words. While our nation has done things that might cause certain animosity in the Islamic world nothing could possibly have justified the actions of 9.11 any more than the resentments of the German people of the Treaty of Versailles justified Hitler.

I am pretty libertarian and very much agree with Cong. Paul on many issues outside the Republican mainstream, I couldn't disagree more on this one.

Plus it was great theatre for Rudy.

I found Giuliani's response to Ron Paul deplorable.

Analysing and trying to comprehend the motivations of terrorists is NOT AT ALL the same as deeming their actions "justified" or their victims "deserving."

The first thing a detective will do when investigating a homicide is seek to establish motivation. This doesn't mean, for one second, that the detective is trying to work out whether or not the victim "deserved" to die or whether the murderer was "justified" in committing the crime.

Had Ron Paul actually said, "The victims of 911 deserved what they got because the terrorists had good reason," then fair enough. Demand an apology; it would be more than apt. However, he said nothing of the sort. What he did instead was pinpoint a contributing factor; one that US intelligence agencies acknowledge as having played a major role.

Either Giuliani deliberately spun Paul's comment to win cheap, desperately-needed applause for himself or he is a man incapable of critical thought.

Either way, he presented himself as undeserving of the Republican nomination.

Actually, the real sporer, Paul never said that America deserved 9/11, but that America's foreign policy contributed to the terror attacks.

WW2 has nothing to do with the issue at hand, so your point is invalid.

Oh? It appeared to me that he came in with a distant third place. JMHO but Rudy's the one who's in the wrong party.

Of course he didn't say it was justified, but it's intellectual specificity blurs the vast moral distinction that are required in times of war.

The next President has to continue to draw the very clear dialectic dichotomy between US and THEM. My ToV analogy is that however academically and strategically interesting we find a discussion of the root causes of some of our enemies animosity, we are at war and job no. 1 is to win it, then discuss the practical and metaphysical guilt as to its cause.

That is the lesson of history. Remember "Imagine" is only a song.

I don't know if I'd call that a "throw down." Ron Paul wanted to talk about the real problems our foreign policy has, that our intelligence institutions tell us it has, which is fomenting hatred toward us around the world. Hatred is a motivator for terrorism, and I think killing the motivation is a far better plan than being militarily paranoid.

And Rudy's response was: He was at 9/11 and he doesn't believe Ron. Well, if he doesn't believe Ron he doesn't believe the 9/11 Commission Report.

This is intricately tied to the other problems America faces, such as the government's tremendous shortfall in funding entitlements, and the move of the world economy away from Dollars and into other assets. Even if we wanted to continue such intense involvement in the Middle East, can we really afford it?

Rudy says that we were attacked on 9/11 because they hate us for our freedom of religion, freedom for women, etc. Isn't he essentially saying that each of us "invited" the attacks by exercising our freedoms in our everyday lives? Since I am a woman living "free", is it my fault?

We, as citizens, have little to no control over policies in the middle east. We do however, have full control over how we act in our daily lives which is the reason Rudy says we were attacked. If anyone is blaming the people of the United States for the 9/11 attacks, it is Rudy Giuliani and everyone who agrees with him.

So many want us to give up much of our freedom in the name of terrorism, but that seems to be unrelated to the fact that those same people claim that our freedoms are what caused us to be attacked in the first place. Although I still wouldn't agree, at least it would make more sense if they said we should give up our freedoms because that is why we were attacked in the first place.

slap-you should preface your name with the word "sophistry" for the syllogistic distortion of your argument.

The appeasment argument you present essentially concedes my point and refutes benbowman simultaneously on the first issue-the very nature of our existence in the land of milk and honey offends the Islamofacsists and especially the Jihadi. As much as I bitch we are still the very best place on earth, with the capacity to be so much better.

Your second question raises and entirely new issue. My response would be to divest the federal government of responsibility for some of its non-core functions (like K-12 education for example) in light of The Age of Terror.

I'd urge anyone who reads this to check out "Who was right: Rudy or Ron?" by Patrick J. Buchanan May 18, 2007 .

Also, could anyone tell me why don't the terrorist hate Switzerland so much? They have freedom too ya know.

Giuliani is ignorant and a tool. How can anyone with half a brain conclude he won the debate? Sure, in the short term, to the Bush Supportin' Sheeple (brainwashed by the powers that be/corporate media).

Dr. Ron Paul SCHOOLED Giuliani during the debate. In the long term, and with the help of the internet, where Americans can replay the ENTIRE exchange between Paul and Giuliani (not just carefully edited distortions), the "Mayor of America" lost BIG TIME!

Ron Paul has opened up a can of worms and has certainly done his patriotic duty by stating his views.
