The Gay Marriage Smear
I hate to have to take time out to knock this stuff down, but I've seen enough low-level chatter that this warrants it. The latest is a blog calling itself "Evangelicals for Mitt" that claims that the Mayor supports gay marriage:
(One exception here would be gay marriage, where I know of no shift in either man's position--i.e. Gov. Romney has never supported gay marriage and his actions have borne that out, whereas Rudy continues to be an unabashed supporter.)
Wrong. The definitive statement of Rudy's position came earlier this year, when he stated:
I believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman, that it should remain that way, it should remain that way inviolate, and everything should be done to make sure that that’s the case...
And here's the thing. He hasn't changed his position on this. Try and find a quote of his from when he was mayor supporting gay marriage. You won't.
The Mayor was for civil unions. But guess what? So is President Bush.

On the one hand, it looks like Mayor Giuliani may pursue a strategy of making himself a visible if not announced candidate for president later in the 2008 election cycle. On the other hand, doing so risks allowing competitors like McCain and Romney to define him negatively in certain areas for key constituencies and stifle his momentum.
I would like to see the Mayor come out as soon as possible and tackle head first the obvious areas where his Republican competitors who are willing to go negative are trying to paint him in a corner - gay marriage and gay rights, abortion, and gun control. If he can put those contentious issues behind him, then he gets to define his own message going forward in terms of issues like the global war on terrorism, crime, taxes, government spending and growth, energy policy, and leadership. And I think it makes some sense to tackle those stickier issues during the 2006 campaign where he is not going to get bombarded head on as a member of the Republican campaign team, as opposed to after November when he is standing out there all alone and the media has nothing else to write about. It would be great for him to be able to say with confidence and evidence in 2007 that these issues others are trying to trip him up with were covered while he was on the campaign trail in 2006 and so it is time to move on.
As much as the Mayor is going to want to talk about his pet issues rather than social issues during a 2008 campaign, he won't get to do so if the media is stuck in gotcha mode asking about social issues. The chorus of questions can drown out your message. So address your weaker areas now for the record when there will be less scrutiny so that you can go forward after November, driving and controlling your own message and referring others who want to bring up controversial issues to previous statements.
