Texas Governor Rick Perry Endorses Rudy Giuliani for President

Texas governor Rick Perry endorses Giuliani

Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani on Wednesday won the endorsement of Texas Gov. Rick Perry, despite their differences on abortion rights.

Perry, an abortion opponent, said his biggest concern had been Giuliani’s support for abortion rights but that he was satisfied Giuliani would appoint judges who view the issue conservatively.

“The one (issue) that I wanted to hear him give me an answer and look me right in my eyes was that issue of who can I expect, what type of individual can I expect on the Supreme Court,” Perry said at a news conference with Giuliani.

“He clearly said … you can look for people like Scalia and Roberts and Alito. Let me tell you, I can live with that,” Perry said, referring to conservative Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia and Samuel Alito and Chief Justice John Roberts.

Perry said when he buys a pickup truck, he doesn’t rule it out simply because it has one option he doesn’t like.

Giuliani, who is addressing social conservative voters this weekend in Washington, said he wants conservatives to focus on areas where he agrees with them.

“I’m not going to get every vote,” he said. “The idea is going to be that there’s enough we agree about and enough we’re facing — foreign threats and domestic problems — that it may just be if they think about it, that I’m the best candidate.”

“What I really want is a relationship in which we respect each other, even if we disagree,” Giuliani said.

An important endorsement for the Mayor from a social conservative Governor in a very red state.

Perry has drawn the conclusion that the Mayor is not a one issue candidate and nor should the GOP nominee be.

Will California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger who agrees with Rudy on abortion be the next endorser?

Stay tuned……

Tommy Thompson to Endorse Rudy

Republican Presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani makes a campaign stop at Spill the Beans coffee shop Thursday, Oct. 11, 2007, in Greenvillle,S.C.

Tommy Thompson to endorse Giuliani

Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani will pick up the endorsement Friday of former GOP rival Tommy Thompson, a one-time Midwestern state governor.

“Rudy Giuliani has shown that he is a true leader. He can and will win the nomination and the presidency. He is America’s mayor, and during a period of time of great stress for this country he showed tremendous leadership,” Thompson, the former Wisconsin governor, said in a statement obtained by the Associated Press.

The former New York mayor is to accept the endorsement in South Carolina later Friday.

This endorsement helps the Mayor particularly in Wisconsin where the general election polls show Rudy and Hillary Clinton in a close race.

The presidential election is a toss up, at least in Wisconsin. A recent poll from Rasmussen Associates has the voters saying that when Hillary Clinton is matched up head to head with Rudy Giuliani, it comes out Clinton 43%, Giuliani 43%. When she is matched up against Fred Thompson, the margin is a bit bigger, 44% to 41% and with John McCain it is 43% to 40%.

But if her opponent were to be one of the other Republican candidates, she should do much better. Matched up against Mitt Romeny. Clinton gets 45% and the former Massachusetts Governor gets 35%.

Wisconsin has a history of being a very close state and its 10 electoral college votes are hard to gather up. For instance, in th last two elections, John Kerry carried the state by only 11,000 and four years before that, it was even tighter for Al Gore who won the state by 5,000.

Stay tuned for the official endorsement later in the day.

Rudy Giuliani Watch: Southwest Florida Today

Rudy Giuliani in Southwest Florida this morning

Giuliani raps Clinton on Iraq, Iran

Republican Rudy Giuliani said Saturday that Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton has not stated clear goals for dealing with the Iraq war and Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

The former New York mayor also criticized Clinton’s health insurance proposal and her suggestion that every child born in the U.S. should get a $5,000 “baby bond” from the government to help pay for future costs of college or buying a home.

Based on Clinton’s answers in recent debates, Giuliani said during a town hall meeting that he cannot figure out her position on Iran.

The Money Quotes:

  • “We’re dealing with a level of ambiguity that I don’t believe is a good sign in a would-be commander in chief in a time of war,” said Giuliani, who has positioned himself as the one Republican able to thwart another Clinton presidency.
  • “If you listen to Democrats and some people in the press, the whole reason we’re in Iraq is to figure out how to withdraw,” he said. “That’s all they talk about. I don’t know if they realize how counterproductive that is. I don’t know if they realize how strategically irresponsible that is.”
  • “Americans solve problems, not the government,” he told the several hundred people who came out for his appearance in the Fort Myers area in southwest Florida.
  • “Government gets out of the way. It creates an atmosphere of safety and security. It creates an atmosphere of fairness. Other than that, it doesn’t try to plan your life for you. It doesn’t try to become nanny government,” he said.
  • “I think it’s seared in the minds of all Americans how important Florida is,” he said.

Rudy continues to attack Hillary Clinton and the Democrats (not other GOP Presidential candidates) in a state that he and the GOP MUST win in order to win the Presidency. He currently leads in the polls for the GOP nomination and in general election match-ups in Florida.

Rudy Giuliani Leads in 3Q GOP Presidential Fundraising

Republican presidential hopeful and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani smiles as he stands over 5-month-old Birch Carter while greeting supporters and customers at a coffee shop Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007, in Clayton, Mo.

Giuliani Raises $11 Million, Leads GOP

Republican Rudy Giuliani raised more than $11 million for his presidential campaign over the past three months and ended the quarter with more than $16 million on hand, his campaign reported Thursday.

More than $10.5 million of his fundraising was for the primary contests. The balance was designated for the general election. The figures make Giuliani the leading Republican fundraiser for the second consecutive quarter.

Good news for Rudy.

Bad news for the rest of the GOP field.

Of course, money isn’t everything but……..

  • John McCain’s campaign is broke or in debt, having raised $6 million for the quarter
  • Mike Huckabee raised only a $ 1 million
  • Mitt Romney’s campaign would be broke unless he wrote himself a check, having raised and burned through $9 million or so.
  • Fred Thompson came in with $8 million

Rudy has a long way to go in fundraising to match the Democrats though. With the field obviously narrowing will more GOP donors step up for Rudy?

Stay tuned……
